2024 SOUTH AFRICAN REPORT by TIM ATKIN
We are very proud to share our recent scores from this year’s highly anticipated South African report by Tim Atkin. At 332 pages, this is one the longest reports Tim has ever produced. It is not only filled with wine reviews but most interestingly, insights and observations from his interviews with a huge range of South African winemakers and producers. If you are interested in the South African wine scene and what the future may hold, it makes for a very interesting read!
Beaumont CWG GG's Chenin Blanc 2023 | 95 Points
Made in small volumes, alas, as it's offered at the Cape Winemaker's Guild Auction, this
comes from the 1974 block that also supplies grapes for the Hope Marguerite Chenin Blanc.
Focused, pithy and mouth-wateringly fresh, this has a sheen of vanilla oak, notes of thatch
and wild flowers, pear, oatmeal and lemon zest flavours and a tapering finish. 2025-32
Beaumont Hope Marguerite Chenin Blanc 2023 | 94 Points
The two oldest blocks at Beaumont, planted in 1974 and 1978, supply the grapes for this
concentrated, low-yielding Chenin Blanc from Sebastian Beaumont. Sweetly wooded in 20%
new oak, it's still quite tight and restrained at the moment, with lots of green apple acidity,
undertones of patisserie and aniseed and a stony finish. A wine that will reward patience.
2025-30
Beaumont New Baby 2022 | 94 Points
New Baby is not so new these days, as it was first produced in 2015, but it remains as exciting
as ever. Made without Chardonnay and Semillon in 2022, it's a blend of Chenin Blanc, 25%
Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Colombard showing a touch of flinty reduction, grapefruit and
tangerine flavours, stylish 20% new wood and a palate-cleansing finish. 2025-30
Beaumont Fifty Year Celebration Pinotage 2022 | 93 Points
Made as a one-off celebration wine, this intensely perfumed, well-judged Pinotage is a
60/40 blend of fruit from 48 and five-year-old vines in Bot River. Fermented with 5% whole
bunches, it has scented 33% new oak, notes of violet and rose petal and a palate of plum,
raspberry and sweet spices. 2025-30
Beaumont Vitruvian 2019 | 93 Points
Vitruvian is an unusual assemblage that uses Mourvèdre as a base complemented by 56%
Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Pinotage. More than the sum of its parts, it's a
peppery, intense, blueberry, fig and black cherry
Beaumont Far Side Mourvèdre 2021| 91 Points
The Beaumont’s have been making a varietal Mourvèdre since 1999, which gives them a long
association with the grape. Picked early for freshness, this combines pepper and fynbos
perfume with a meaty, savoury, slightly earthy palate of damson and cranberry supported by
stubble-chinned tannins. 2024-29
